A group of girls narrowly escaped when Boko Haram attacked their school in the Nigerian town of Chibok last year, abducting more than 200 of their classmates.

Now, nearly a year later, 21 of those girls are back in school, making a courageous stand for education in defiance of the terrorist group, the Huffington Post reports.

In the CNN video here, the students describe their new lives at American University of Nigeria, where they are enrolled on scholarships, telling CNN that while they are still afraid, they are determined to resist Boko Haram’s attempts to “keep them out of school.”

“I’m very brave and determined,” one girl told CNN.

According to a report by The Guardian, one of the 21 students was asked to write an essay explaining what education meant to her. She wrote: “Education gives me the wings I need to fly.”

The American University of Nigeria, which is located about 170 miles south of Chibok, has launched a fundraising campaign to support the girls. It costs about $5,000 to educate one student for a year, the school says.

We’re so proud of these brave girls and we wish them luck. To donate to the fundraising campaign, click here.
