Iyanla Vanzant has fixed or tried to fix, a lot of troubled lives. Her latest fix-ee is actress/model Karrueche Tran, who for the last four years has been Chris Brown’s girlfriend of record. A few weeks ago, the world, and Tran, found out that Brown had a 9-month-old baby named Royalty. Apparently, Tran found out just like everyone else – via TMZ.

At that point, Tran announced,  also via social media, that ‘A person can only take so much.’ And wished Brown good luck with his new family. As rumors abound that Brown is moving his daughter’s mother, a Tran acquaintance to L.A. from Houston, Tran talked to Vanzant for a special airing on OWN on Saturday, at 8 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT. Reports flew after that interview that Tran had kicked Vanzant’s crew out of her house, which Vanzant says is nonsense.

“That is not what happened at all. Reports said Karrueche Tran kicked Oprah’s people out of her house. Oprah doesn’t own me. (laughs) What happened was her manager was not pleased with the direction of the questions and he got upset and stopped the interview. And then she and I had a conversation and I said ‘This is what I’m here for what do you want,’ and we agreed and continued the interview.”

The question that prompted the temporary suspension of the interview was a pretty explosive one, but it’s one Vanzant says is important to acknowledge.

“I asked her the ways in which he was damaged and then said ‘What about you would attract a damaged man? In what ways are you damaged?”‘

Tran’s people wanted to focus on Tran’s life and upcoming projects more than her relationship, which Vanzant says that she does cover in their conversation. But obviously, Tran would not be a household name in many households without her relationship with Brown and the one-time love triangle she was in with superstar Rihanna, Brown’s ex-girlfriend.

And Brown and Tran documented their relationship via their respective social media accounts, lending to scrutiny, judgment and speculation on their relationship. Brown even alleged at one point that Tran had willingly participated in threesomes with him and then deleted and apologized for the post.

Vanzant says that what she thinks is that both Tran and Brown are young and naive.

“His behavior is probably a lot worse than hers but she’s very naive. But she represents hundreds and thousands of young women who are making critical relationship mistakes with hundreds and thousands of young men. She represents Boniqua in Cleveland who’s fighting with Freddy. She represents some of the critical mistakes young women make in relationships with men whether they are with a public person or not and that was my interest in the interview. And I was very up front about that and I told her that.”

What folks may not know about Tran is that she was born to a Vietnamese mother and an African-American father, but was raised by neither, says Vanzant. She was raised by a Jamaican woman in a Black  neighborhood and went to a public school.

“Can you imagine being Vietnamese and Black raised in a Jamaican neighborhood trying to find your way in a public school? That’s enough to make you want to have a drink with your cornflakes,” Vanzant says. “And she’s young. She’s 26 years old and she started this relationship she was 21. Remember falling in love when you were 21?

You fall flat on your face and you think your life will be over if you don’t have this person. I hope that people can see the mistakes she’s made. The media and social media made this relationship and her attachment to social media but I hope people can say she’s just a naive young woman.”
