If you haven’t seen Motown: The Musical get off this site and buy a ticket. The show has left Broadway for the road and Alison Semmes and Martina Sykes are part of the show and Sykes is particularly happy about the show’s current tour stop – it’s her hometown of Tampa, Florida.

There are eight shows in Tampa and Sykes and Semmes are dancing, singing, and wigging their way through four decades of Motown. The show has the unique distinction of being the Broadway show that has the most wigs!

Sykes plays four characters – Cindy Birdsong, one of the Vandellas, Mary Wells and Gwen Gordy as well as a narrator. Semmes plays Diana Ross.

“They’re incredible. They vary from city to city,” says Sykes of the crowds that have come out to see the show. But Detroit, where it all started was particularly special as Stevie Wonder showed up and sang “I Wish” at the end of the show. “I didn’t sing, we just jumped up and down.”

Sykes says that she’s all out of tickets in Tampa, especially as her father, Rev. Dr. Sykes is a pastor at St. Petersburg’s Bethel Community Church. But the congregation did buy 85 tickets to come see the show.

Motown: The Musical is coming back to Broadway this summer but is heading through Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, and Kentucky among other cities through June 26. Click HERE to see if it’s heading to your city and to get more information on the second Broadway run.
