If you’ve wondered why TV host Nancy Grace is so passionate about the criminals she exposes on her self-titled HLN show, it’s because of what happened when she was at Valdosta State University.

While there, she fell in love with Keith Griffin, a young man on a baseball scholarship. She imagined her future as an English teacher married to Griffin and raising their children. But Griffin was shot and killed steps from campus by a mugger who got away with just $34. That changed Grace’s life and after she grieved, she changed course, going to law school and becoming a prosecutor.

“To this day the baseball field is dedicated to my fiancee,” says Grace. “He was a baseball player at Valdosta,” she says. “[But despite that] I loved it. My dear friend who I was in a sorority with, Stephanie is still down there with her family. I have great memories of Valdosta.”

The TJMS met Kendrick Johnson’s mother while in Valdosta. The family who believes their son was murdered and then left rolled up in a gym mat at his high school are still looking for answers. His parents and shows like Grace’s now in its 10th year, have kept the mystery at the forefront of the media, which often brings pressure for a resolution.
