The “Blurred Lines” copyright infringement trial started in a Los Angeles courtroom.
Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, Robin Thicke, Pharrell Wiliams and members of Marvin Gaye‘s family started proceedings to determine if Thicke’s biggest hit infringes Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up.”
In 2013, Thicke, Williams and T.I. filed a lawsuit against Gaye’s family to get declaration that their mega hit didn’t copy the late legend’s song. Nona Gaye accused Thicke of not only stealing “Got to Give It Up,” but “After the Dance” and turned it into “Love After War.”
Williams, T.I. and ex-wife Paula Patton, who co-wrote “Love After War” are ordered to testify in judge John Kronstadt‘s courtroom, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Gaye family’s attorney Richard Busch focused on Thicke and Williams’ inconsistency between depositions and interviews while promoting “Blurred Lines.” They credited Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up.” “They crafted, the evidence will show, a completely different inconsistent story in this case.”
Thicke and Williams’ attorney Howard King responded to Busch’s opening statement by telling jurors to focus on the depositions and forget about media interviews.
“There are many unsworn interviews of people trying to sell records,” he said. “It’s going to be easy to get distracted by the perhaps tawdry details of what goes on in the music business.”
