Dear Tom,

2/19/15-

My mom recently retired from the university of Texas Anderson cancer center after 30 years of service.  She is always there for whoever needs her, even if it means putting her own agenda aside.

After raising me & sending me off to college, my mom took in her god-daughter Raye Jean when she was 6 months old. When she turned 4, my mom assumed legal guardianship and today, my little “god-sister” is 21, lives with my mom while taking college courses & even has a part time job.

In 2011, I gave birth to my son, Marcus, and my mom helped take care of him up until the time he was old enough for daycare.  While taking care of my son, she also took care of her dad who was battling cancer.

She went to his house every day to cook his meals, do laundry, and cleans the house – whatever he needed done. Eventually, she became his primary caregiver.  He died on October 31, 2014 at the age of 84 and she stayed strong for everybody handling all of the funeral arrangements.

My mom lives on a fixed income so it’s a real challenge for her to do anything extra special for herself.  Her hobbies are simple:  watching movies, doing word puzzles, tending to her flower beds and she loves to cook.

I know she recently went “window shopping” to see how much it would cost to upgrade her laundry room from old school to new school.  Can you help a mother out?
