Tyler Perry says he had to figure out a way to get out of ‘that damn dress.’ With ‘Madea’s Tough Love’, his first-ever animated film, arriving on DVD and On Demand today, he found the solution.

“I noticed that all these kids were watching the play and the movie and saw how much they loved ‘Madea.’ All that content is not appropriate for young kids so I did an animated DVD especially for kids. I think they’re going to love it,” Perry says. “This isn’t an Adult Swim thing, this is for kids.”

Perry says creating and animated movie took two years, a little slow for his usual scheduling. “I would have done 50,000 ‘Have and Have Nots [in that time.]”

Perry had the concept before his son, Aman, was born 7 weeks ago. He says that his baby, is of course, the most beautiful baby in the world.

“I know some people say that even when their baby’s ugly, but this is a beautiful little boy. It’s such a blessing. I’ve spent so much money and I’ve traveled the world to find the peace that I feel when I hold him in my arms.”

Perry says he and his girlfriend, Gelila Bekele, sdhave help and they’re not ashamed to say so.

“All that trying to do it on our own? That didn’t work out for me. Mom was completely exhausted every day, not sleeping and I was like ‘Something’s got to give’ so I thank God we were able to do it.”

Perry’s animated DVD is available everywhere, but he’s particularly grateful that The Haves and The Have Nots, airing on OWN tonight, is a huge hit.

“This is a super hit for cable. 3.2 million viewers on a network that started four years that is only in 80 million households that’s not HD everywhere. We’re not in 100 million households like BET. These numbers are huge. If we were on network, it would be three times that. So I’m just grateful for it.”
