A homeless couple is facing assault and civil rights charges after they brutally attacked an unidentified black city worker.

Both Robert Snyder, 45, and Shayla Witts, 28, reportedly left the victim bruised and bleeding when police got to the scene.

According to police, the 29-year-old male employee tried to escort the intoxicated pair out of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority station when Snyder punched the man and placed him in a headlock, while Witts began pulling out his hair.

Once at the scene, police were met by a trail of blood and hair extensions. The victim was taken to Tufts Medical Center, where he is currently being treated.

The Washington Post reports:

Once in custody, Snyder initially denied hitting the victim, before smiling and telling police, “I punched him a few times,” according to CBS.

From there, the couple’s versions of events begin to differ.

Snyder told investigators that the incident started after he was thrown down the stairs “by some black guy,” according to Boston.com. Witts said the incident was retaliatory and began after “some black girl with attitude” told them to leave the station, the story continues.

The pair appeared in court Monday on charges of aggravated assault and battery and criminal civil rights violations.
