I just want to lose about two inches of my stomach bulge. But I have a bad back and fibroids, making it hard to do sit-ups/crunches. Can you recommend any other exercise that I could try? Secondly, please direct me to a verse or verses in the Bible that speak on women’s health.

With the situation with your back, it is very important that the exercises you attempt won’t make your condition worse and a medical professional can determine that. The Lord looks at us as a whole — which is His body. He says that we are his temple; a place He wants to reside.  So, when He speaks of health and the body, He is speaking to the man as well as the woman. He says “I wish that you would be in health and prosper, even as your soul prospers.” {3 John 1:2)

How do I lose the weight?

I am going to give you six foundational principles that will help you on the road to decreasing body fat, but understand that this is not complete.  #1 — Never eat a carbohydrate alone.  #2 — Drink plenty of good quality water.   #3 — Make sure you are doing fat loss exercise rather than fitness exercise.  #4 — Stop eating two hours before bed.  #5 — Make sure you eat the proper combinations.  #6 — Don’t attempt to lose the body fat long-term without God. Transformation cannot be accomplished without the transformer.  Without the transformer, we only have the ability to change, and if you only change, you can always go back. But with transformation you can never go back. Think about a caterpillar that goes through metamorphosis, when it comes out of the cocoon, it’s no longer a caterpillar crawling on the ground, it is a butterfly that takes wings and flies — never to crawl again.

I went from 265 to 207. But earlier in the year, I was diagnosed with thyroid problems and was treated. Now I’m gaining weight due to hypothyroidism. Can you recommend anything I need to do differently in the gym?

The first thing I would do is get a second opinion on the hypothyroidism from a homeopathic doctor that believes in modern medicine, as well as natural and nutritional remedies, one that will give you good Christian advice. Sometimes they put you on thyroid medication when all you really need is iodine. When you get on thyroid medication, the longer you are on it, the more permanent it becomes. It requires iodine to produce thyroid hormone. If your iodine levels are low, you cannot produce thyroid hormone, so all you really need in this case would be a great iodine regimen. I recommend a second opinion.

I have problems with my rotator cuffs. What can I do to strengthen and improve my shoulders without surgery?

Depending on the damage that is done you may be able to rehabilitate the shoulder, but there is no way of knowing until you find out the extent of the damage. I would hate to recommend something that would make it worse.

What type of foods should I eat while at work? I am constantly walking and I snack on pretzels and fruit, but I don’t feel the pretzels are good for me. And I’m always hungry.

If your desire is to decrease body fat, there are 75 signals that you can send that will equate to fat loss. On the other hand, there are 75 signals that you could send that will equate to fat gain. My recommendation is to read the book Faith & Fat Loss; it will give you some direct answers on how to decrease body fat. The first step in losing body fat and keeping it off is never eating a carbohydrate (pretzels and fruit) alone. Always eat the combination of a protein, essential fatty acid, and carbohydrate (example, 15 raw almonds, string cheese, and an apple.) This is a healthy fat loss snack.

I’m a 42-year-old man and I would like to know the best way to lose my stomach fat?

It depends on why you are carrying the excess body fat. It could be cortisol, which can be derived from conscious or subconscious stress. It could be lack of movement or overeating. These are some of the most common reasons. I can’t give you an honest answer without knowing the root of the belly fat, but the Faith & Fat Loss book will help you.

I workout three times a week. How can I get rid of man boobs?

40-60% of all men in America struggle with your situation. I developed a piece of exercise equipment that specifically targets your dilemma — you can learn more about it here. Nutrition plays a tremendous part in eliminating the cause of the problem.

Pastor, at the beginning of your interview, you talked about the steps to losing weight and a lot of people got it backwards. Please reiterate that again.

We are trying to target fat loss with fitness programs because we don’t understand the difference. If you lose body fat, because of your fitness program, it is easy to put all the weight back on plus 10 or 15 lbs. Fitness is surrounded by a season, short-term results, requires more of your time than 1/2 hour per day, and strict dieting. Fat loss is developed around a lifestyle — something that can be done for the rest of your life and an exercise program of no more than 15 to 20 minutes a day. We have thousands of people around the country who have lost weight permanently by following our fat loss program.

How can fasting assist in weight loss? I have been on a sugar binge and I see the problem but its harder and harder to resist. How do you know when eating is emotional versus just not having any willpower?

First of all, I would say is that fasting is first spiritual — a food strike is more natural (or physical).  If you go without food just to lose weight I would say there is a much better way. Whatever it takes to lose the weight is what it will require to keep it off. We need to develop a healthy lifestyle. Emotional eating and lack of willpower are connected, but there are chemicals in a lot of our foods that are addictive. You may be able to resist certain foods for a period of time, but willpower runs out.  Our program it is not about willpower, it is about God’s power!!

What scripture supports putting the Lord in place of food?

God says that there is no other God before Him and that He did not want us to have an idol. An idol can be anything. It can be a car, a person, clothes, money, food, etc. When food begins to control us instead of being led by the Spirit — food becomes an idol. (Philippians 4:19, Exodus 20:3)

Fruits and vegetables are so expensive! Where do you recommended buying them?

Fruit and vegetables are the first foods that God gave us (Genesis 1:11). This is where we get our nutrients and vitamins. If you can’t afford the fruit and vegetables, you need to have a great vitamin supplement and do the research to make sure that it is absorbable in the body.

If you are eating for comfort, how do you go back to using the Holy Spirit as your comforter instead of food?

The first step is acknowledgment. I commend you for even considering that, because most people don’t and won’t. The next step is to pray and ask God, by His grace, to help you overcome this dilemma. And when you pray believe that you receive what you ask for — it may not be the easiest thing in the world, but start taking the proper steps.

Acknowledge that in the past it was food that comforted you, but now it is God. In the beginning of this transition, it may be food and God until you make the complete transition. Man looks at perfection, but God is looking for progression. God bless you!!

I have about a 3-inch vertical cut from a C-section forty years ago. No matter how many crunches or other ab exercises I do, I can’t get rid of the fat around my stomach. Any suggestions?

The crunches will make your stomach stronger. Adding resistance to those crunches will make your stomach bigger. The leanness that you want to see is already there — hidden beneath the layer of excess body fat. More than crunches, your nutrition and aerobic exercise on a fat-loss program will lean out the abdominal area. I have worked with numerous people who have had C-sections both horizontal and vertical that have tackled the same problem.

Pastor, I’m overweight, emotionally stressed and going through relationship problems. I have a grown daughter who has two kids and one on the way. I don’t eat or wait too late to eat. Can you give me a scripture for comfort? I feel like just giving up. I’m 43.

On behalf of Tom Joyner, we would like to gift you with our book Faith & Fat Loss. Please give your information to the Tom Joyner team, so that we can send a book out to you. I think it will be a real blessing to you in the situation that you are in.

(1 Peter 5:6-7) “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.” Humility causes you to reach out and up, receiving with open arms what God has, so that you can be free. God can meet our every need, including fat loss. As our Father, God wants to take care of us.  He wants us to cast all our cares on Him and allow Him to be God.

What would you recommend for sugar cravings?

Sugar cravings and alcohol cravings respond exactly the same in the body. The best thing to do is go through the withdrawals for 7-10 days (completely without it.) We have a 21-day program to help you get through the toxicity, so that you can get control over your eating and other areas of your life.

What should you take for energy?

A good quality source of water. And good nutrition, because food was designed to give energy and strength to the body. Exercise, because the more you do, the more you are capable of doing.
