Cathy Hughes is the founder and chairperson of Radio One and is the first woman to own a radio station ranked #1 in any major market.

She recently received the Phoenix award from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, the Black Women’s Agenda Business and Economic award and is an honoree at the Living Legends Foundation’s award show in Los Angeles this Friday, October 3rd.

She talked to the Tom Joyner Morning Show to talk about the history of her legendary company.

On asking for a loan to start Radio One from a well-known singer:

“I asked Herb (from Peaches & Herb) to borrow a $100,000 and he gave it to me. In exchange I was going to give him 10% of the company.”

On how much Radio One is worth today:

“$3 billion.”
