Labor Day weekend started off in tragedy for people in Chicago as random shootings plagued the city.

One man was shot dead Friday night in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, NBC Chicago reports. The unidentified 36-year-old man was found lying on a sidewalk with bullet wounds in his head and thigh. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

At least 10 others were injured in me random shootings from Friday night into Saturday morning. That included a 47-year-old woman who is now listed in critical condition at Stronger Hospital in Chicago.

The long weekend continued with a second death on Sunday night. According to the Chicago Tribune,  a man named Paul Land passed away as the result of his injuries from a shooting in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side. Paul was struck in the arm and stomach during the shooting, while another man got shot in the leg.

The Tribune went on to report that another 13 were injured Sunday aside from Paul’s death.

Accurate totals are still hard to calculate as more reports come in, but an estimate of injuries from these two sources comes out to about 23 people.

As devastating as these figures are, NBC Chicago reports that the death toll was even worse last year with 11 fatal shootings and 43 other injuries.
