Team USA track star Torrin Lawrence, one of the best sprinters in the country, died Monday morning after his car was struck by a tractor trailer, reports TMZ.
The 25-year-old, who recently won a gold medal in the 4×400 relay at the IAAF World Relays, was driving in Georgia around 1:40 a.m. when his car blew a tire and came to a stop.
Lawrence got out of the car to call 911, but a big rig struck the vehicle – which knocked the car into Lawrence. The athlete died in the collision.
USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel issued a statement saying, “Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply.”
Lawrence was a standout at the University of Georgia and holds the NCAA record for fastest indoor 300m sprint.
