The Newseum exhibition, “One Nation With News for All,” tells the story of how immigrants and minorities used the power of the press to fight for their rights and shape the American experience.

Radio One will be featured in the exhibit along with a live interview with the company founder and radio pioneer Cathy Hughes.

Hughes will be speak at the Newseum on Saturday, August 9 at 2:30 pm. The event is free with the purchase of an admission ticket to the Newseum, but seating for the interview is limited and on a first come-first serve basis.

In 1980, Hughes bought WOL-AM in Washington, D.C. She then changed its programming from an all-music format to one that included talk radio. The radio station became the foundation for Radio One; which captures the Black experience through its community-oriented programming, the cable network TV One and Interactive One which publishes sites, including NewsOne, The Urban Daily and Hello Beautiful.

Now, Radio One’s 50 stations reach markets serving 82 percent of the nation’s African American population.

The mission of the Newseum is to champion the five freedoms of the First Amendment through education, information and entertainment.
