  • NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A white TV reporter who voiced his opinions about black families and relations with police during a segment about a fatal police shooting said Tuesday he was suspended from his station and won’t return.

Sean Bergin said he was suspended from News 12 New Jersey without pay on Monday and with pay on Tuesday. Bergin, a contracted employee, said the station told him that his assignments would be cut to one a week and he declined to remain in the position.

Bergin’s report, which aired Sunday, featured the widow of a black man who police say shot a rookie Jersey City police officer to death and who was then killed by officers responding to the shooting. The widow, Angelique Campbell, told Bergin that Lawrence Campbell should have killed more officers, but she later apologized.

Bergin said in his report that the underlying cause of an anti-police mentality is young black men growing up without fathers.

“It’s important to shine a light on this anti-cop mentality that has so contaminated America’s inner cities,” Bergin said after airing the widow’s comments and showing a memorial for her husband. “The underlying cause of all of this, of course, young black men growing up without fathers.”

The TV station said that the response to Bergin’s report was being handled internally and that it doesn’t comment on personnel matters.

“It is News 12′s policy that reporters must be objective and not state personal opinions on-air,” the station said in a statement Tuesday.

Bergin said that he added his commentary just before going on air because he had heard from police officers outraged that the station was airing the widow’s comments.

“If I had it to do over again, I would do the exact same thing,” Bergin said. “I broke the rules. I knew I was breaking the rules. But sometimes you have to break the rules to do the right thing.”

He said that the issue of young black men without fathers deserves more media coverage.

The National Association of Black Journalists’ president, Bob Butler, challenged Bergin’s connection between young black men growing up without fathers and anti-police sentiments and said that Bergin went beyond the standards of a news reporter by inserting his views on the story.

“Are there problems in the inner city with kids without fathers? Yes. But does that make kids violent? No,” Butler said. “There are a lot of kids without fathers who go to college, graduate and become upstanding citizens. He’s talking about a social phenomenon where there’s lack of opportunity in communities.”

Bergin, 49, said that he has worked for News 12 as a freelance reporter for seven years, for six or seven days a week. He said he made about $1,300 a week working on stories in New Jersey and in New York’s Long Island and Westchester County.

He said the station told him Tuesday that if wished to remain he would be limited to one story a week on Long Island for $300.

    1. A lot of white folks that just hate black folk, but theres a lot of white folks that dont see color at all.and there is some that pretend to like other races and they do not, you’ll never get rid of them rather there in law enforcement, gov agencies, because tnis is taught behavior in the white community, until they stop teaching it to the kids and grankids it want go away, as it hasn’t after so many years today.once lived in geneva switzerland, and theres so many nationality there no one cares, they just live.

    2. While it is heart breaking that there aren’t more men in (SOME) homes; there are definitely lots of Black males that were raised by single females that are great fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles, cousins, etc. Black males are no more monolithic than any other group. The fact of the matter is that in lots of instances Black people are viewed under one microscope. That’s the ignorant/uninformed tragedy of these type stories

    3. You people are crazy! This is why so many of us AA’s are in prison, wasting their lives away buying junk they can’t afford, killing each other, tearing our communities down, LITERALLY and FIGURATIVELY! Get a grip! Not having a decent father to emulate or maybe never seeing a decent black man does have consequences for our youth. Not to mention having a drug addicted, neglectful, cussing ignorant and uneducated mother; so many of us are doomed before we ever leave the womb. i dont know if we’ve decided to put on blinders, are ashamed or in denial, but too many of us are some F*CKED up folks and the ones of us who are decent, law abiding, responsible, educated and progressive need to separate ourselves from the opposites and let them all rot.

      • Thank you AA woman. Notice nobody is disputing what he said, just that a cracker sad it. Well Peeps, Jesse or Sharpton ain’t gonna say it.
        Holla’

        • @ jiggy: I’m OK with Sharpton’s crusade for fairness; but I don’t want to hear Jack S that Jesse Sr, or Jr has to say. They can both go kick rocks as far as I’m concerned!!

    4. I guess all the white men/white boys who have gone on a rampage and committed mass murder in schools, and other places came from fatherless homes as well.

      • I hear yeah Mystified. Usually those type white dudes come from 2 parent homes, and the parents usually say that they had no idea of their child’s mental problems, or that they knew but didn’t realize it was to that violate extent

    5. Fox News will hire him. To name one successful black male raised by a single mother (young white mother) I guess he never heard of President Barrack Obama elected November 2008, re-elected November 2012 and that he is The Leader of The Free World. There are many successful black males raised by a single mother In his little pea brain white females and women of other races ethnic groups are not single parents, what a fool he is and need to go back to the dark ages like a cave man with cannibal eating habits.

    6. Yea, a black boy raised without his father could become President of the USA. Oh, but I guess he doesn’t know that. He need to get informed or get a different gig. I hear that the KKK is looking for men just like him, that is if he’s not already one.

    7. While, the issue of young black men living and growing up without the benefit of a good father is something that seems to be prevalent in our communities and we do have a lot of good young men who didn’t have their fathers but when did Mr Bergin become the spokesperson for us? Breaking the rules was not the right way to go since your main purpose was to appease your white police brethren

    8. The problem is racist cops that patrol the inner-cities. Has nothing to do with father-less kids. They just let 2 go that are members of the KKK.
