A new study has flipped the stereotype that most abortion clinics can be found in black and Latino neighborhoods are completely wrong.
Anti-abortion activists will often paint abortion as preemptive genocide through claims that the majority of service are located in black and latino neighborhoods
Researchers at the Guttmacher Institute have found that these arguments do not hold true when looking at the data. In actuality, about 60 percent of facilities (six in 10) that perform abortions are located in predominantly white neighbor hoods.
By comparison,13 percent are located in Latino neighborhoods. Only six percent are in predominantly black areas, and that’s still less than the 18 percent of clinics in areas where the racial makeup is pretty even.
To put it in simpler terms, there are nearly 10 times as many abortion providers in white neighborhoods as there are in black ones.
Furthermore, of the clinics that perform more than 400 of these procedures per year, 58 percent of those are in mostly white areas. Meanwhile only nine percent are in predominantly black neighborhoods. Even when combined with the 16 percent of these providers in more Hispanic areas, that’s still not enough to add up to the number in white ones.
