Keshia Chanté‘s not mad that Lifetime chose to cast someone else for the lead role in its upcoming Aaliyah biopic. She didn’t want that part anyway!

As long as there has been buzz about an Aaliyah movie, there’s been a not-so-quiet campaign to get the “106 & Park” host to play Aaliyah. For a long time, she seemed to be all about it, but she recently stated on Instagram that she opted to back out of the project before Zendaya’s casting was announced.

“This particular project just wasn’t for me. After learning more about the situation & how the Haughton family truly felt, I just didn’t feel like it was right,” she explained.

Keshia’s still holding out hope that she’ll get to play Aaliyah one day because she predicts that the TV movie won’t be the only story we see about the “One In A Million” siren coming to the screen.

“At the end of the day, this is just one, of what will be many movies on Babygirl’s life,” she wrote. “So maybe one day, if it’s the right circumstance, timing & I get the blessing, I’ll choose to be a part of something.”

In the meantime, Keshia’s urging fans to keep Aaliyah and her music in their hearts as she backs Zendaya in her attempt to tackle the role. “Keep #Aaliyah’s legacy alive & positive! And support my girl Zendaya who is just living out her dreams & working hard to do so!” Keshia stated.

After years of chomping at the bit to play the iconic artist, we find a bit hard to believe that she would back our of her own will. We’ll give her the benefit of the doubt on this one, though!
