Bryant Collins was driving along Highway 72 in Georgia when he spotted a baby crawling along the side of the road.

“I had seen something out of the corner of my eye, and I thought it was a baby,” Collins recalled. “I just stopped and, when I got out, there was a baby … almost in the highway.”

Collins immediately called 911 and waited with the baby until emergency crews arrived.

“I’ve been in a lot of bad situations,” he said. “But I’ve never seen that.”

Collins said when the baby began to cry, he did the only thing that he knew to do:

“I turned my phone on and let her listen to some music and she calmed right down,” he said. “I know gospel music calms me down.”

According to Madison County Sheriff Kip Thomas, the baby girl, who had been left in the care of older siblings, crawled 300 yards through the woods and onto the shoulder of the road.

“Honestly that’s almost a miracle: that a 15-month-old can go that far from her house, into the woods, fall down an embankment, wind up near a major highway and really not get hurt that bad,” Thomas said.

The child’s father, Timothy Pickens, was arrested and her mother will possibly face charges.
