It seems as if the other 106 HBCU’s will have to make a little room. There is a new kid on the block!

Simmons College recently learned that it has been accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE).

As a result Simmons College becomes the nation’s 107th HBCU.

Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the universities four-acre campus is in the heart of a community of low-income, first generational college students with limited resources to attend college.

According to the White House Initiative On HBCU’s:

The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.”

“The accreditation of Simmons College of Kentucky will have a ripple effect throughout west Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is the most monumental achievement, by African Americans, to take place in the state in the last 100 years,” Simmons College President Kevin Cosby says.
