According to Hillary Clinton, her and Bill left the White House “dead broke”.
The NY Daily News:
In an ABC News interview broadcast Monday, Hillary Clinton defended the speaking fees she and Bill reel in, saying, “We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt.”
“We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy,” she added.
She also said that Republican criticism of her handling of the deadly 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya, “is more of a reason” for her to run for President in 2016.
“I do not believe our great country should be playing minor league ball. We ought to be in the majors,” Clinton said. “I view this as really apart from — even a diversion from — the hard work that the Congress should be doing about the problems facing our country and the world.”
Since leaving the State Department in February 2013, she has been paid $200,000 per speech. She has appeared before some groups for free.
Hillary Clinton made the “dead broke” comment when ABC’s Diane Sawyer asked, “You’ve made five million making speeches? The President’s made more than $100 million?”
Clinton said: “First of all, we had to pay off all our debts, which was, you know, he had to make double the money because of obviously taxes and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members.”
Republicans seized on her “broke” remark — highlighting the risks for the expected White House hopeful as she begins a hyper-scrutinized publicity blitz for her book, “Hard Choices.”
“This is outrageous. How out of touch is Hillary Clinton when “dead broke” = mansions & massive speaking fees?” GOP National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus tweeted.
