The transition from relaxed to natural hair has become increasingly popular. What is now referred to as the “natural hair movement,” has more Black women wanting to ditch the chemicals for their own curls.

I’m an advocate for going natural and being natural, but a few things should be taken into consideration before making the decision to become a naturalista!

You must embrace your hair. I’ve heard stories of women taking the leap to go natural and then hating it because of the way their hair looked. When it comes down to it, it’s not for everyone. But to truly be about this natural hair life you have to accept your hair, its texture, and everything that comes with it. It’s something different, but you have to fully embrace and love it.

You need patience…a lot of it. If you think you’re about to go natural today, and your hair goals will be met tomorrow,  you are sadly mistaken. Patience is required for managing and growing natural hair. Understand that results take time, especially if the last time you were natural was when you were a baby!

It can be time consuming. I’ve been natural for some time now, so I can pretty much manage my time well when it comes to my hair. But it wasn’t always like that. When I first started caring for my hair the way I was supposed to, I was spending hours a week on my hair. Yeah, I know – crazy! But the reality is until you can master your own regimen it can cost you some extra time you weren’t spending before.

It’s not that fun in the beginning. Don’t let the bouncy curls and new products fool you. Going natural can actually be very frustrating. Knowing this before starting your journey will be helpful. As time goes on you will have fun with it, but keep realistic expectations when starting out.

You have to really want it. If you’re not all in, you will easily slip back into wanting a perm or getting a weave. Don’t make the choice to go natural because it looks like the popular thing to do right now. Do what’s best for you, your hair, and your goals. The easiest way to know if it’s for you is by asking yourself why you want to go natural in the first place. If you can come up with a solid answer that makes sense, go for  it!
