Singer Kem has a new release “It’s You” out ahead of his as-yet-untitled fourth CD, coming later this year. The Detroit-born crooner, who was once homeless, says that his music is reflective of the love that he’s still seeking.

Despite his gorgeous new ode to romantic love and his other gorgeous ballads, he remains single. “I write songs about what I want love to be and I’m still looking,” KEM told The Tom Joyner Morning Show.

“I’m looking for the quan. I’m looking for the one that can handle me and my life and what I do, that can respect me and my children and that I can bring home and relax with and be myself with,” KEM says. “I believe in that and that’s where my music comes from. My music comes from that place. That’s what I want and that’s what I’m longing for.”

Kem says he once had what he was looking for but admits he was the one who messed it up. “Hindsight is 20/20. I don’t think I can go back,” he says. He won’t admit what he feels responsible for, but says it likely can’t be fixed now, despite his way with a beautiful lyric.

“You want them to be back for the right reasons. I need you to love me with money and success and without it, too. It gives me good fodder for music though. That’s what you hear when you’re listening to a KEM record.”

Kem will be a part of the lineup at the Capital Jazz Fest this weekend June 6 -8 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. Click here for lineups and times.
