My nephew, Ty is a sweet, nine year-old with special needs. He was born with several disabilities and had many corrective surgeries. As an infant he had a stroke leaving one side of his body partially paralyzed. Soon, he will have eye surgery and will wear an orthopedic device for his leg to eliminate a pronounced limp.
Six months ago, on Ty’s ninth birthday, his twenty-eight year-old mother died from complications of diabetes. He is now living with his grandfather and step-grandmother, who is my sister. Even though they are mature in age, without question they opened their arms and hearts to their grandson. Ty’s greatest love is playing the drums in the church choir, while his grandfather plays the piano.
