  • Homer Hallum, 76, froze to death when he was locked out of his Detroit senior living complex, according to My Fox Detroit.

The septuagenarian had left his building using the back door, which locks shut once someone exits and cannot be used for re-entry. When Hallum needed to get back into his building, he could not do so. The building’s back door leads to a gated parking lot and Hallum had forgotten his key fob and building key, so he was basically trapped outside in the blistering cold.

Detroit’s temperature on the night Hallum was locked out was three degrees with a wind-shill of negative 20.

According to Hallum’s daughter, Sheila Garrison, her dad had no alternatives but to brave the freezing temperatures until he could no longer. “He had no other choice in blistering cold, below-zero weather – all he could do is lay down and basically die,” she lamented.

When a building security guard finally spotted Hallum he was “stiff as a board and cold as ice, heavy cold,” Garrison added. An ambulance was summoned but Hallum passed away en-route to the medical facility.
