People will do and say anything to get the harsh criticism of the public off of them. Sometimes, it works and other times, it only causes the public to scrutinize even more. Paula Deen is realizing the latter after she gave an interview to People Magazine and compared her struggle with regaining fans after being accused of being a racist with the struggle of acceptance NFL prospect Michael Sam has after coming out.

In the upcoming issue of People Magazine, Paula Deen talked about how people will always refer to her as “embattled” or “disgraced” after suffering the huge scandal she did last year. Deen told the magazine, “I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name. It’s like that black football player who recently came out. He said, ‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”

In case you forgot, Deen fell from grace when the southern cuisine chef was hit with a lawsuit from a former employee who revealed Paula Deen frequently used racial slurs and dreamed of catering and planning a slavery themed wedding. Due to the lawsuit, which was later dismissed, Deen lost her cooking show and several endorsements. However, her business is on the mend after she secured an investment of between 75 and 100 million dollars.
