During a college championship round of Jeopardy three college students avoided the “African American History” category as long as they could.

Instead of choosing to answer questions about black history, the contestants gladly chose from categories like “International Cinema Showcase,” “Weather Verbs,” and “Kiwi Fauna.” Not surprising since they answered only three out of the five questions in the “African American History” category correctly.

It’s a little painful to watch. Check it out for yourself in the video above. It gets good around 15:56 mark.

  1. Off top there was an error. The University of Florida was established in 1853 and Florida State University in 1851. Making FSU the oldest university in the state of Florida. Now I will continue to watch the rest of the show. Go Noles!

  2. I agree with Guest1…it wasn’t painful at all. Not sure what all the fuss was about. By the way, I’m an African American woman.

  3. Afican American history is American history. All should know. Don’t let those who just pasr their citizenship test know more than you. and they do about yourr American history. The answers were a guess see the last girl about the poet. i learned this 6th grade I am 60 years old. African American. They will never try to learn our history or contibutions. They still think the gas mask was invented by a white man, don’t know who was ariechtect for the streets of Washington, dc or who was the first man at the pole, not Perry…….

Seriously? Now you’re a racist for not wanting to answer questions on a game show?
Someone said below that maya Angelou complained that there arnt enough blacks on jeopardy? Should we lower the requirements for them like we do for college admissions? Enough of this.

  5. I agree 100% Asantewaa….. 100%. We have many stories to be told that are unknown. Take the new movie now, 12 years of Slavery….WHO KNEW??
Black History Classes should be mandatory in all grades. I feel we better act and speak out….We must be more Vocal, before it raises its nasty head again.

Would you somehow expect anything different? American history is no longer require study in American schools and emphasis on African American achievement and issues, forget it. It would not be that surprising, even if sad, if an all black contestant crew would have avoided the category.

  7. Yep, I don’t know what the big deal is really. This is not the first time that African American questions have been posed on Jeopardy and I found some white folks get the answers right. Let’s stop looking for problems where there aren’t any. Sheesh!!!

This is one of the few articles where every response is a bit different, yet they are all valid. A few years ago Maya Angelou took Jeopardy to task for lack of black contestants. There is a bit of truth to that. I also have watched Jeopardy for a long time. I just like the brain exercise. Sometimes I think I can even go on there and win, but admit Im a bit of a chicken. One thing is true though whether any one here wants to amdit it or not. Some white folks do think they are smarter becuase they hardly ever see us on there. Truth be told though, these categories prove my point otherwise. Whilea lot of caucasians are studying french art, russian literature, and going abroad and learning some of these topics we, for the most part (booshwah types dont reply) are doing our best just to get where we need to be in life and havent always had the fee time, or lack of distractions that life throws at us to learn such Trivia. In the past I have seen some white contestants Ace the black history category. I do think Jeopardy can do better by us, but then “What else is new”? Thats the same with almost everything.

I personally don’t think much should be made of this. My wife and I compete everynight against each other on Jeopardy and even have a running book of wins and losses. We have done this for over 20 years of our 26 years of marriage. We are both African Americans. We competed against each other on this particular Jeopardy episode and we only answered 2 of the 5 Black History questions! I personally think my wife and I are both educated people. My sisters and brothers, this is no big deal! Let’s concentrate our attention on the hunting season in Florida of our young black men.

  10. I didn’t watch the video but you can’t expect them to get it right. Black History is NOT really taught in these schools in the United States. MLK is pretty much it.

You are so right… and some on this blog ask what’s the issue, what’s the big deal? This is the issue, and the big deal, its not taught or learned for that matter-surprisingly by blacks or whites. Here is the response to all those who say we no longer need Black History Month–its needed.. and if we do away with it, then let’s also do away with Women’s History(March), Jewish Heritage and Asian Pacific Month(May), LGBT Month(June), Native American Heritage(November) and Hispanic Heritage(Sept. 15-Oct. 15)…we are a mosaic of both history an cultures in this country, can all of our stories be told and appreciated…

  11. It wasn’t painful at all. They saved the best for last. Plus, 3 out of 5 questions were answered correctly, more than I can say about some of the categories they have to choose from. Should we have expected them to get them all right, and if yes, why? Stop making drama where there is none.
