Westboro Baptist Church, the fringe pseudo-Christian organization that protests at the funerals of high profile figures whom they feel have “sinned,” is planning to fly to South Africa to protest the funeral of Nelson Mandela, who died December 5. He was 95-years-old.

The hate group, also widely known for their homoantagonistic signs and slogans, claims that Mandela is going to hell for adultery and should not be honored.

Mandela was married 3 times and divorced twice. He was married first in 1944 to Evelyn Mase; they divorced in 1957. He married Winnie Madikizela, his most well-known spouse, in 1958; they divorced in 1996. And he married Graça Machel in 1998 on his 80th birthday.

The organization’s founder, Fred Phelps, is a former Civil Rights attorney who protested institutionalized racism much of his career before going on an anti-gay crusade. While some have called the move to protest Mandela’s funeral racist, Westboro responded with the following on Twitter:

Racist or not, it is disrespectful and dishonorable to protest at the funeral of one of the most transformative figures in the world. It is highly doubtful, however, that South African police will allow them anywhere near the ceremonies.
