COMMENTARY: Why Cosby’s ‘Family Values’ Show is Just What We Need Right Now

  • I hope Bill Cosby is successful with his new media venture because prime-time television needs a strong family-values program now more than ever.

Cosby, 72, said he wants to offer viewers a new family comedy that explores relationships between children and their parents, a powerful and timely subject that is sorely missing from evening television.

“I want to be able to deliver a wonderful show to [a] network,” Cosby told TV Guide. “Because there is a viewership out there that wants to see comedy, and warmth, and love, and surprise, and cleverness, without going into the party attitude.”

“They would like to see a married couple that acts like they love each other, warts and all, children who respect the parenting, and the comedy of people who make mistakes. Warmth and forgiveness,” Cosby said.

“So I hope to get that opportunity, and I will deliver the best of Cosby, and that will be a series, I assume, that we could get enough people week after week after week to tune in to, to come along with us,” he added.

Cosby’s idea should resonate with millions of Americans – black and white – who are raising families. He said the new program would not be a remake of “The Cosby Show,” but instead would examine the lives of older children and how they interact with their parents.

I thought of Cosby’s idea for a family values television program while watching a CBS News clip of a game called “Knockout,” a violent and deadly game for some black teenagers who identify an unsuspecting victim and deliver a cold-hearted sucker punch that is so forceful that it renders the person unconscious.

During the game, the young men take turns until one of them knocks the victim unconscious. There have been at least three reported deaths within the last two years from this deadly activity – and police say the game is becoming more popular, especially in black communities across the country.

So what’s the purpose of “Knockout?”

“For the fun of it,” one teen explained, according to the CBS station in Washington, D.C.

“Knockout” is a convincing example for why we need the family values television program that Cosby is offering.

    1. Just Laugh! That’s what we need right now!
I applaud Mr. Cosby for doing what he does best. Laughter is good for the soul. It unites people. Clearly, some of you need to LOL!!

    2. Im making over ●●$7k●● a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do●●●● ➠ ➠

    3. my Aunty Alyssa just got an almost new white Audi TTS Coupe from only workin part-time on a home computer. why not look here App200com

    4. Amazing that a show as potentially important as this one MAY get an opportunity to air. Where is the disconnect between the multitudes of families who would benefit from such a show and the people in positions to allow or disallow such a show?

    5. Bill Cosby has been advocating for the responsibilty of American Afrikans for a long time. He has been met with overwhelming hostility and has been pushed aside by others blacks. I congratulate him on his sucesses and his tenacious drive to encourage others to do “the right thing”.

    6. We should all listen to The BlackMan(State of Emergency)on Youtube. It will enhance Mr.Cosby’s project. It’s being used by mentoring groups around the world. It’s also seen on Afrotak TV in Germany. Peace!

    7. Even if Bill Cosby is successful pitching the idea of a family values show to a network, there is still the matter of good script writers and casting to contend with. Next will be promoting the show, I suppose the late night shows would welcome him.

      • The cyber police too are interested in your business enterprise. Tax departments of your state and IRS are also interested. Judge Digital is now preparing the subpoena you will be served with.

    8. I don’t know why, but Black people in general (that means not all), tend to gravitate toward the trash that is called reality TV, and it’s really the last thing we need to indulge in. Black women on TV obsessed with handbags and the “best” human hair …and Black women who call themselves “bitches” … it’s just so lowlife – I don’t care how much money they have. Our young people are looking for the shortest quickest route to riches, while their homes suffer the poverty of fatherlessness, lack of education, and a range of other social ills. So yes, I hope Bill Cosby is successful, and anybody else who can bring something decent and meaningful to TV, not to mention funny without every other word being profanity. Put down Zane, turn off the “Preachers” of LA and Housewife shows and invest your time wisely in things that will bless your soul and profit your mind. Studying for a degree would be a better use of time….exercise, etc.

      • Naw because white kids kill their parents. Remember the Menendez and Sandy Hook. Oh I almost forgot that the Columbine was making bombs in their garage. Did mommy and daddy miss that.
