UN Women recently put out an ad campaign that simply showed what people think of women with Google searches like “Women need to…, women cannot… and women shouldn’t…” and the results that come up in the pulldown/autocomplete menu displayed every negative thought society has about women. This powerful ad gives a voice to the challenge that women still face of breaking the barriers of limitations society places on us.

The words “women shouldn’t suffer from discrimination anymore” and “women cannot accept the way things are” appear in tiny, white print that are barely legible, showing how these opinions are mostly ignored.

Campaign creator, Christopher Hunt says, “This campaign uses the world’s most popular search engine (Google) to show how gender inequality is a worldwide problem. The adverts show the results of genuine searches, highlighting popular opinions across the world wide web.”

These ads prove that sexist opinions against women aren’t just in countries outside of the United States. Google is worldwide and different countries typically get various results. However, several of these very results come up in the U.S. Reports claim that sexist thoughts against women is a globally institutionalized opinion historically laced into the foundations of several cultures.

It’s sad that society still paints a picture of women that screams inequality. We’ve fought so hard to make major waves in every field and you can see our best efforts in women like Oprah, Malala Yousafzai and Ursula Burns.

What do you think of these powerful ads?
