According to CBS, Nodaway County Prosecutor, Robert Rice recently announced that he’s requesting a judge to appoint a special prosecutor to look into the alleged January 2012 sexual assault of 14-year-old Daisy Coleman and her 13-year-old friend, Paige Parkhurst in Maryville, MO. Rice had previously (and still maintains) that he dropped the charges against the teenage boys who allegedly assaulted Daisy and Paige because of the lack of evidence and the victims’ “refusal to cooperate.” Rice says Daisy and her mother, Melinda utilized their Fifth Amendment right, making the case unable to be prosecuted. Daisy and her mother have publicly disputed those claims. Melinda reportedly told the Kansas City Star that she only invoked her Fifth Amendment right after the felony charges were dropped.

Rice claims that is was Daisy and her mother’s appearance on CNN this week that made him want to request a special prosecutor. Rice says, “I’ve spent my entire life trying to work as hard as I can to do the right thing all the time, and then someone can throw out a couple of baseless rumors that makes everybody think that I’m a crook.”

This case has earned some national attention because of the firestorm of violent reactions against these victims. Daisy’s family relocated, only to find their Maryville home burned to the ground. Her friend Paige just recently started speaking out, hoping to urge other teens who have been sexually abused to not be afraid to share their stories.

The city and the prosecutor all said that they hope a review of the facts will allow high emotions by people throughout the country to subside as well as healing for all people involved. Well isn’t that nice! How come no one mentioned the criminal acts that took place after Daisy decided to come out about her ordeal? Last time I checked burning someone’s house down was a crime that deserves investigating and prosecuting. So are verbal and digital threats, which is what Daisy and he family endured, causing them to flee Maryville.

It seems these families are a long way from justice, but at least the ball is rolling in a better direction. What do you think about this devastating case?
