12-year-old Laporshia Massey died of an asthma attack because her school’s staff members were unable to immediately care for her.

The Bryant Elementary School in Cobbs Creek, PA only has a nurse on staff on Thursdays and Fridays due to the Philadelphia budget cuts; Massey became ill on Wednesday.

According to FOX, Massey’s father, Daniel Burch, and his fiancée, Sherri Mitchell,  were not notified of her illness until later in the day. Also, both claim they were not notified that a school nurse was not caring for Massey.

The Daily Mail reports, “At the end of the school day a staff member drove Laporshia home at 3:15. Burch immediately recognized that his daughter needed immediate care after she ran up her stairs to grab her nebulizer machine.”

Burch rushed her to the hospital but she died that same day.

She died on September 25, 2013.
