BET delivered some good news to Gabrielle Union today.

According to Deadline, “Being Mary Jane,” the drama where Union stars as a successful TV news anchor, has been picked up for a second season. The show’s first season has yet to air but network decided to order more episodes after the success of show’s 90-minute pilot, which drew 4 million viewers and a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating, in July.

“Being Mary Jane” was created by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, the husband-and-wife duo behind popular shows like “The Game” and “Girlfriends.”

“She’s human. That’s what I wanted to show, (that) this woman is a person that we all can relate to,” Mara said of Mary Jane’s character. “I wanted to show those raw, real sides, the secrets that we keep to ourselves, so that maybe we can see ourselves and say it’s OK.”

“She’s flawed,” Union added. “She’s chasing perfection, and she’s falling dramatically short and dealing with the consequences of not having it all in every aspect of her life.”

The series is scheduled to return for eight episodes starting in January 2014.

In related news, BET pulled the plug on “Reed Between The Lines”, the comedy that starred Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Tracee Ellis Ross.
