CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Democrat Patrick Cannon will face Republican Edwin Peacock in a race to decide the next mayor of Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the 46-year-old Cannon, a council member who was first elected in 1993, edged James Mitchell in a hotly contested Democratic primary. Unofficial returns show Cannon received 56 percent of the primary vote.

Meanwhile, Peacock easily defeated David Michael Rice in the GOP primary. The financial adviser and former two-term council member received more than 90 percent of the vote.
