I hope you and all listening had a great Labor Day Weekend. There are two stories that caught my attention over the past few days that I believe send a message to every single member of the TJMS family. The first is the amazing story of Diana Nyad, the 64-year-old that yesterday became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a protective cage, willing her way to a Key West beach just before 2 p.m. ET, nearly 53 hours after jumping into the ocean in Havana for her fifth try in 35 years.

For those of you that never heard of here before, I recommend you read her full story if you get the chance, but my mentioning her this morning is less about swimming and more about life. But before we get into that, let me tell you about another special person.

Sybil I am sure that you know about Carson Huey. For those of you that do not know who he is, this young brother is in the freshman class of Texas Christian University. He was co-valedictorian of his senior class, plays the piano, scored 1770 on his SAT’s, speaks Mandarin and is studying to become a quantum physicist. Oh…..and he is 11 years old.

An article I read about him stated that His mom, Claretta, said her son had intense focus as an infant.  By the age of one, he could read.  By five, he was doing pre-algebra.  Calculus, he says, relaxes him.

So in one week we hear about an 11-year-old going to college and a 64-year-old swimming over 100 miles. This is not about education or physical activity. This is about excuses. What excuses do we have? No matter how young or seasoned you might be there is a dream that is in your mind and more important you spirit that you are being called to fulfill. Diana, who is an accomplished businesswomen and not a professional swimmer failed four times in 35 years before reaching her goal. What was that thing you stopped believing was possible and put in the back of your mind? What is that thing you just told your child or a young person in your life wasn’t possible?

Family…..God…and if that is not your belief, the universe, has provided us with amazing gifts, that many of us seldom use. Dreams and visions are usually not fantasy. They are our subconscious providing us with a picture of both our possibility and promise. Stop talking about what you can’t do, or create and start doing it. Challenge the young people in your life to push for the impossible. Diana Nyad’s mantra was Find A Way.  Carson is seeing what others refuse to see as possible. Let’s all do both without fear. Because you gotta realize family, failing on your face still moves you closer to your dream than standing still on your feet.

Dream Big – See the impossible – And no matter the age, know that GOD and the gifts you were given at birth are bigger than any challenge you will ever face.
