Miami’s own DJ IRIEhosted his 9th Annual three-day action-packed charity weekend from Thursday June 27th to Saturday June 29th. Things kicked off with an exclusive Hublot VIP welcome reception at Hyde Beach in the SLS Hotel South Beach and guests included Heat forward Udonis Haslem, Norris Cole, Jeremy Shockey and Christina Milian. This was followed by the annual golf tournament, after party at LIV and bowling for charity Saturday night.
“I couldn’t be more proud of DJ Irie and his foundation and what he does working with young people,” says actor and author Hill Harper. The outspoken Harvard Law School alumnus and host of TV One’s “Verses & Flow” was in attendance to lend his support to Verizon’s After-School All-Stars bowling tournament at Lucky Strike lanes. TheUrbanDaily.com asked Harper about his own philanthropic efforts and why so much more needs to be done for our children.
“My foundation is called the ‘Manifest Your Destiny Foundation’ and we’ve been doing work for six years now attempting to deal with the drop-out crisis. There is a direct correlation between drop-out rates and incarceration rates. You can almost lay the graph on it. Communities with high drop-out rates you have high incarceration rates. I’m tired of seeing young African-American and Latino people being locked up. Education is the key to reversing that. That’s why foundations who encourage people to stay in school and provide resources are so important.”
