The central Florida community of Sanford is in Seminole County, which is 78.5% white and 16.5% black.  Perhaps this explains why the jury is composed of five white women and only one woman of color and it is unclear if she is African American, Hispanic or both. The four alternates consist of two white men and two white women.  The information on the jurors was acquired from numerous different news sources.  Let’s meet the jurors:

Juror E-6 is a middle-aged white woman and a native Floridian. She is married and has two children, ages 11 and 13.  She is active in her church as well as involved with her children’s school activities.  She said that she did not know the facts of the case well and has never served on a jury before.

Juror B-51 is an older white woman who moved from Atlanta and has lived in the area for nine years.  She is not married and does not have children.  Now retired, she previously worked as a real estate agent and once supervised a call center with around 1200 employees.  She has served on juries before, once as an alternate in the early ‘90s and again three years ago in Seminole County.

Juror B-29 is a young woman of color (Hispanic or Black) who moved to the area four months ago from Chicago.  She is married and has eight children of which one is over the age of 18. She is a nurse and works in an Alzheimer’s section of a nursing home and has been there around three months.   She has never served on a jury before.  She attends church and is devoted to her home and family. She stated that she did not watch much television but when she did she really enjoyed watching the Real Housewives series on Bravo.

Juror B-76 is an older white woman who has lived in central Florida for 18 years. She has been married for 30 years and has two adult children.  She and her husband manage rental properties and she loves rescuing animals in her free time.  She said she hasn’t heard that much about the case and this would be her first time to serve on a jury.

Juror E-40 is a middle-aged white woman who moved to the area from Iowa seven months ago. She is married and has one adult son. She stated that she remembered hearing very little about the case but did acknowledge hearing the phrase gated community and teenager.  She said she served on a jury 20 years ago on a drug case in Pennsylvania and no verdict was reached.  She is a football fan and loves reading and traveling.

Juror B-37 is a middle-aged white woman who has lived in the area for 18 years.  She is married, has two adult children and works in management. Asked if she was keeping up with the case and she stated emphatically that newspapers are used in the parrot’s cage. She said she has too many animals to feed to have time to do much else. She has a 15-year-old crow with one wing, three dogs, four cats, and a couple of lizards and of course the parrot.

Meet the Alternates:

Alternate Juror E-54 is a middle-aged white man who grew up in Central Florida and has two stepchildren.  He admitted on the questionnaire that he had some knowledge about the case and wrote that Zimmerman was “attacked and beaten.  But added that he really doesn’t know what happened that night and could keep an open mind.  His favorite thing to do is trace his family’s heritage/ancestry.

Alternate Juror B-72 is a young white man and says he heard about the case but didn’t focus on the shooting and doesn’t watch much news.  He says he is stoic and does not think sympathy should factor into a jury’s verdict. Also, he said he would not have “pursued” someone. Instead, he would wait for police if an issue arose.  He is a maintenance technician, loves to work out and has a dog.

Alternate Juror E-13 is a young white woman and has lived in Seminole County for 17 years. She is a student and worked as a surgical assistant for about two years.  She said she has not paid much attention to the case and has never served on a jury.  She attends church and owns horses.

Alternate Juror E-28 is a middle aged white woman who has lived in Seminole County since 1985. She is originally from Texas, has two adult children, and has been married for about 28 years. Her answers during questioning indicated that she knows little about the case and that work absorbs most of her life. She’s a soccer coach and volunteers with ‘Relay for Life’ and Girl Scouts.
