Dove is empowering women to see themselves in “a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety.”

In a new ad, as part of Dove’s Real Beauty Sketches campaign, the personal care brand asks seven women to describe their facial features while FBI-trained forensic artist Gil Zamora composites a sketch.

Zamora asks the women to describe their eyes, foreheads and chins in detail. In response, the women use phrases like: “I kind of have a fat, rounder face,” “I’d say I have a pretty big forehead” and “My mom told me I had a big jaw.”

When the artist completes the sketches, he then asks a group of strangers to describe the same women. Zamora creates a second sketch and the differences between the self-described images and the second are astonishing.

“We spend a lot of time as women analyzing and trying to fix the things that aren’t quite right and we should spend more time appreciating the things that we do like,” one participant says.

The video ends with Dove’s new campaign slogan: “You are more beautiful than you think.”

Women are their own worst beauty critics. Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. At Dove, we are committed to creating a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. So, we decided to conduct a compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see.
