Jeri L. Wright, the daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, was indicted Wednesday for misusing $1.25 million of grant money in Illinois. Her case is part of a growing investigation.
A grand jury in Springfield returned three indictments, including one that claims Jeri L. Wright, of Hazel Crest, took $28,000 in state money. The funds were for work related to the grant’s purpose (training), but about $20,000 was diverted into bank accounts controlled by Regina and Ronald Evans, of Country Club Hills, IL.
According to NBC Chicago, “a superseding indictment also was handed down Wednesday contending Evans, the former police chief of Country Club Hills, and her husband committed wire fraud, money laundering and more in using the 2009 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Through two nonprofits the Evanses ran, the couple allegedly promised to use the grant money to train bricklayers and electricians and provide GED preparation in a renovated theater they owned in Chicago.”
The report also says Regina Evans’ brother, Ricky McCoy, received the third indictment charge for crimes related to the ongoing investigation as well as money laundering. The charge suggests that McCoy cashed a check for $16,249 and put the money into Regina and Ronald Evan’s bank accounts.
As of this posting, there’s been no comment from Jeri L. Wright, or her father, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who of course is the controversial former pastor of President Obama.
And yes, look for the Obama haters to have a field day with this.
