SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – Officials say more than $40,000 in cash has been stolen from a suburban Detroit church following its Easter services.

The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports the break-in occurred late Sunday or early Monday at St. Therese of Lisieux church in Macomb County’s Shelby Township. Officials say a number of chalices also were taken from the Roman Catholic church.

Linda Maccarone, church manager, says the theft is “very disheartening.” She says church officials last checked the building about 9 p.m. Sunday following five services that day.

The church is the second broken into in Macomb County in recent months. St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Utica also was targeted.
