The Tom Joyner Morning Show crew takes a funny but critical look at Pope Benedict XVI, the Roman Catholic Church and HBO’s “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God” documentary which reveals the history of sexual abuse scandals within the Catholic church.

—————

TOM JOYNER:  The Pope was clean this morning.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Yeah, man.

SYBIL WILKES :  It’s his last turnaround.

TOM JOYNER:  It’s his last time, he got that red cape with the fur collar.   Man, that is nice.  I wish I had one of those capes.  That is nice.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  He’s packing light, getting about there isn’t he?  Huh?

SYBIL WILKES :  He’s gotta move.  He’s gotta move.  He might be able to get it.

TOM JOYNER:  He’s not moving that far.  He’s going to a nice castle right there at the Vatican.

SYBIL WILKES :  He’s taking a 15 minute helicopter ride, and just going.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  He needs to be in jail.  That’s where he needs to be.

TOM JOYNER:  He sure does.  He needs to be …

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  According to HBO he needs to be in jail.

SYBIL WILKES :  You saw the?

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  I finally saw, what was the name of it, Sybil?

SYBIL WILKES :  The documentary, Mea Maxima Culpa.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Translated means nasty Catholics.

SYBIL WILKES :  Oh, jeez.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Not all of them, just the ones they had on this HBO special.  Low down.

SYBIL WILKES :  A lot of …

TOM JOYNER:  And no one is talking about it.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Yeah.  Now the Catholic faith is a good faith and I believe in Catholics …

SYBIL WILKES :  I’m really surprised that they’re …

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  … and all that, but this group, this group.  Yeah?

TOM JOYNER:  I’m surprised that no one’s really talking about it.  Because this came out and then two weeks later he resigns.  And what happens in this documentary is that all these scandals go right to this man who is now the Pope resigning.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Bene one six. Ratzinger is his name, right Sybil?

SYBIL WILKES :  He was Cardinal Ratzinger, yes.

TOM JOYNER:  And he was in charge, for over 20 years, in charge of all …

SYBIL WILKES :  … these cases.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Twenty-five, right.

TOM JOYNER:  Of all of the extreme pedophile cases against priests.  All of them.  He was in charge.

SYBIL WILKES :  If there was a priest who was known and for years and years and years and had horrible problems, those were all on his desk.

TOM JOYNER:  All of them.

SYBIL WILKES :  His watch.

TOM JOYNER:  And the Catholic Church is so gangsta what they do is they take all those pedophile priests

SYBIL WILKES :  They don’t fire them.

TOM JOYNER:  They don’t fire them.

SYBIL WILKES :  They don’t do anything.

TOM JOYNER:  They send them to rehab.  But the rehab is their rehab.

SYBIL WILKES :  It’s their own.  They own it.

TOM JOYNER:  It’s their own rehab.  And they have these rehab centers all over the world.  Because it’s been going on for a long, long time.  And he’s in charge.

SYBIL WILKES :  Generations.  Yeah.

TOM JOYNER:  And there’s a lawsuit.  There’s a lawsuit, they’re trying to sue the Catholic Church and the Pope, and …

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  That’s why he got  up out of there…

SYBIL WILKES :  Well, it seems the timing is very odd, Jay.  It’s very, it’s very suspect.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Yeah, I think the worst case was the deaf kids.  The deaf school.

SYBIL WILKES :  The school.

TOM JOYNER:  The whole school.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  The whole school.

TOM JOYNER:  This one priest was said to have relations with over 200 little boys, deaf kids.  Deaf.

SYBIL WILKES :  And to see them as adults, and they’re still using sign language and trying to tell their story, and it’s just heartbreaking that they let this man ruin all of these lives and not be held accountable for it.

TOM JOYNER:  HBO ought to be running that documentary every hour.

SYBIL WILKES :  Everybody should be.

TOM JOYNER:  On all their channels.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  And Al said yesterday when I saw it that if it was a lie the Catholic Church would be suing HBO.

SYBIL WILKES :  And they got nothing.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  They got nothing.

TOM JOYNER:  It was not a lie.

SYBIL WILKES :  And this guy, the pope.  This guy –

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Yeah, Bene 1-6.

SYBIL WILKES :  … now goes away and has a nice little retirement.  Really?  Not so much.  It should not be.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  He got up outta there, man.  Really fast.

TOM JOYNER:  Now, after you see that, then you understand why we say that more than likely that black cardinal from Ghana …

SYBIL WILKES :  Will be the one.

TOM JOYNER:  … will be the one.  Because when you’re that, when you’re in trouble.

SYBIL WILKES :  Who you gonna hire?

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Give it to a black man.

TOM JOYNER:  That’s right.  And the Catholic Church, according to this documentary, is in deep, deep trouble, not just here in America, because …

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  And that was the weird part about it.  They say, well, that’s only in America, and then they start naming all the other countries where they had problems.

TOM JOYNER:  Especially in Italy.

SYBIL WILKES :  Yeah, right there.

TOM JOYNER:  Right there.  Wow.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  So is the Vatican a country?  Or is it looked upon as a country?

TOM JOYNER:  It is a separate, yeah, it’s a separate state.

SYBIL WILKES :  It’s a separate state.

TOM JOYNER:  But it has no football team, it has no marching bands.  It has no army.

SYBIL WILKES :  No, but they have a gang.  They do.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Yeah, and they have a bank.

SYBIL WILKES :  They have a gang of people who are doing really bad things.  And they allow it.  It’s not even like the mafia, Jay, where they take care of them, you know, and they get rid of them in terms of, you know, rubbing them out or whatever.  No, they allowed …

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Now they get rid of you in the mafia, you cause problems in the mafia, you know it.

TOM JOYNER:  You’d get rubbed out.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Right.  The mafia, they take you out.

TOM JOYNER:  They take care of you.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  (Laugh)

TOM JOYNER:  And it starts out, the documentary starts out saying that the real problem is this whole law of celibacy.  And they say that’s just unrealistic.  And then they admit it, they admitted that 50% of the clergy does not practice celibacy.  Now they admit the 50%.

SYBIL WILKES :  Then it’s 100.

TOM JOYNER:  Then it’s 100.  It’s 100.

SYBIL WILKES :  It’s 100.

TOM JOYNER:  And it also makes you wonder if you become, because they promote people for covering up, so everybody …

SYBIL WILKES :  Everybody fails up.

TOM JOYNER:  Everybody fails up.

SYBIL WILKES :  And that takes away from, and you shouldn’t say 100, because you take away from the really good people who are still in the Catholic Church.  We have people, but they are the ones, you know, they are shunned because they are raising the veil of secrecy on all of these people.  There are good people still in everybody’s church, but there are good people in the Catholic Church that are still working.  This really affected me because I’ve had members of my family who had been abused by priests.

TOM JOYNER:  Yeah?

SYBIL WILKES :  And this really brought home a lot of …

TOM JOYNER:  Really?

SYBIL WILKES :  Oh, absolutely.  Absolutely.

TOM JOYNER:  Did you believe them at the time?

SYBIL WILKES :  I didn’t know, it was before I was born.

TOM JOYNER:  But did the parents believe them at the time?

SYBIL WILKES :  No.

TOM JOYNER:  Did they tell the parents?

SYBIL WILKES :  Yeah, they did.

TOM JOYNER:  And just like the documentary said.

SYBIL WILKES :  And initially they did not.  The Father so and so could not have done this to him.

TOM JOYNER:  That’s what the documentary said.

SYBIL WILKES :  Exactly.

TOM JOYNER:  Just like that.

SYBIL WILKES :  There’s no way, and why are you lying?  I mean to tell this child; why don’t you feel as good about this man as we do?  And understand that he’s just trying to help you?  And it ruined his life.  It did.

TOM JOYNER:  And that’s what that documentary, I, oh, wow.

SYBIL WILKES :  And unfortunately he never lived to be able to have the legal wherewithal to file against him.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  But it really shows how could they appoint him to be in charge of the Catholic faith knowing his history …

SYBIL WILKES :  That’s what Tom is saying, those people that are covering this up, they get a better job.

TOM JOYNER:  They’re all involved.  They’re all involved.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  You got to see this documentary.  You have to.

TOM JOYNER:  If you have HBO on Demand and I don’t …

SYBIL WILKES :  And you know somebody who does.

J. ANTHONY BROWN:  Yeah, if you don’t have it, ask if can you come over and watch it.  You know how we do it.
