  • Is President Barack Obama appealing more to African Americans during his second term in the White House?

I certainly believe so. And it’s good for the black community.

Last week, while I was sitting inside my barbershop in Washington, D.C., one customer offered this unsolicited assessment of the president:

“President Obama is going to show us his blackness this time around,” the customer said with enthusiasm. “He’s not running for re-election anymore; he’s got nothing to lose. Just watch.”

I’ve heard this same analysis from many black men and women over the past few weeks who believe that Obama will have a more aggressive approach to connecting with black Americans during the next four years in the White House.

I have heard it all: Some folks have told me that Obama will start speaking out more about the struggles of black Americans and others have joked that he’ll immediately join the NAACP.

At least that’s what many black Americans are hoping for.

Black folks feel like they have a stake in Obama’s presidency and many want a return on their investment. They want to feel that the president has their interests at heart, but many also want to hear Obama publicly express his commitment to black issues.

I believe the president is becoming more engaged with the African American community and he’s steadily setting a tone for the months ahead.

Consider this: Last week, Obama met with a group of African American leaders at the White House to reiterate his support for people hit hardest  by the economic crisis, partnering with high-poverty communities to help them rebuild, making sure folks have access to job training programs, and encouraging companies to invest in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

During the meeting, the president stressed the harm that the automatic cuts known as the sequester will have on thousands of jobs while cutting services to children, seniors, mental health programs and small businesses if Congress does not intervene by March 1.

    2. I believe everything published made a ton of sense.
However, what about this? what if you composed a catchier title?

I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your blog, but suppose you added a headline that makes people want more? I mean COMMENTARY: Will Obama Connect More With Black Americans? Yes | Black America Web is kinda plain. You might look at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create news headlines to get people to click.
You might add a related video or a pic or two to grab people interested about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it could make your blog a little bit more interesting.

    3. Here is what our President should do:
      1. Tell our children it is ok “too act white” , be a nerd and get an education
      2. Get Married before you make a baby
      3. MEN… Be responsible and support your family
      4. Delay gratification

Every study has shown the poorest and perpetually the poorest are those that are single Mom’s or start out as single Mom’s with no Male support and no education

    4. I CAN RESPOND TO YOUR COMMENTS SIR , THE REPUBLICANS YOU REFER TO HAVE THERE MONEY IN OVERSEAS ACCOUNTS NOW, IF THEY LEFT THE COUNTRY IT WOULD BE TO CHECK UP ON THERE REAL INTRESTS AND INVESTMENTS.HOW DARE YOU USE A BLANKET STATEMENT TO DESCRIBE ALL PEOPLE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN DECENT LIVING IN THIS COUNTRY. I MAKE ABOVE THE MINIMUM WAGE BUT THAT NUMBER HAS BEEN BELOW THE COST OF LIVING FOR WELL OVER 20 YEARS AND THERE HAS BEEN NO RISE IN THE LIVING WAGE FOR 30 YEARS , NOW ADD IN THE “WHITE FLIGHT” AND TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE AREAS IN WHICH THE MINIMUM WAGE WORKER LIVES , COMBINE THAT WITH THE LOSS OF SELF THAT COME FROM A LIFE OF STRUGGLE AND HEALTH CARE CO
MES INTO PLAY. BUT A MINIMUM WAGE WORKER CANT AFFORD HEALTH CARE , GOOD FOOD OR A SUITABLE EDUCATION FOR THE KIDS AS IN CHICAGO THERE ARE ATTEMPTING TO CLOSE 100 PLUS SCHOOLS , AND GUESS WHERE, U GOT IT WHERE THE VOICE OF PEOPLE IS DROWNED OUT ,WHERE THE VOICES THAT CAN ASSIST AND ARE PUT IN PLACE TO DO SO SUFFER FROM THE EFFECTS OF LIVING IN DARK SKIN AND WIND UP ONLY TAKING CARE OF SELF. IE JESSE JR. LETS BE CLEAR THE AIR THE DELIBERATE ACTIONS OF “THERE FOREFATHERS” IS THE REAL PROBLEM. WHEN BLACKS WERE REPUBLICAN SHORTLY AFTER THE CIVIL WAR THE FEAR MONGERING THEY SPREAD TO RETAIN OFFICE SET THE STAGE FOR POLITICAL CLIMATE WE HAVE TODAY. ALL THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS MADE ARE TAKEN BACK QUIETLY THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES THAT BUILD WEALTH THROUGH ASCENTION WERE DENIED. WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO BUILD WEALTH AND KNOWLEDGE AND PASS IT ALONG TO FUTURE GENERATIONS IS WHAT HAS ALLOWED OBJECT POVERTY IN THE INNER CITY. LAZY WE HAVE PUT IN HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF WORK , WE ARE TIRED STRESSED AND AT WITS END. AS AN ADULT I HAVE COME TO UNDERSTAND HOW MY FATHER GOD WORKS , HE REQUIRES ME TO GIVE OF MYSELF, FOR I AM MY BROTHERS KEEPER. THE ABSENCE OF GOD IS WHAT U SEE IN OUR COMMUNITY. AND OUR HISTORY IS THE KEY TO THE BREAKTHROUGH WE DESPERATLY NEED.

    5. Talk radio and Fox news contend that President Obama is the one who created this factor known as sequestration that when it kicks in on March 1 will definitely impact African-Americans and others who don’t have a nest egg set aside to weather the economic storm. The Great Depression will probably be kindergarten compared to this thing. Gee, whiz, shucks golly! It took a second term for him (Obama) to start meeting with African-American leaders. One thing is certain, the moment won’t be chronicled in the weeks best photo section in Jet magazine, if they still have that feature. Truth be told that kind of thing does not resonate in the black community anymore. No, it’s not like the photo op in the 60′s that had Dr. King of SCLC, Roy Wilkins of the NAACP and Whitney Young of the National Urban League with President Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House. Substance counts more than symbolism. The symbolism has lost its luster. Blacks turned out to re-elect Obama but it wasn’t like the first time. Whether Obama wil be become a vocal and effective advocate for black Americans, I am going to watch what he and his administration do rather than what they say.

    7. Black democrats don’t realize that they have been sucker by Obama. He won’t and can’t help them because the reason most people are in the economic situation they are in is because they fall into one of these three catagory assuming they are in good physical and mental health. They are either stupid ( makeing bad decision ) have low IQ, and are lazy. Find someone over the age of 30 that have never made above or barly above the minimun wage and you find someone that will fall into one of the three catagories I mention, and no president can change that, If all of the republicans were to leave the country for ten years but leave thrir weath here, when they return black democrats not black republicans of African who emigrants to the US will still be at the bottom of the totem pole.
