Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s defense is expected to bring out their last few witnesses today in the five-month-long corruption trial.

Yesterday, the defense called on four witnesses but they were all no-shows reportedly due to scheduling conflicts.

Sharon McPhail was called as a witness for the defense and she spoke on Kilpatrick’s behalf claiming that he had a “birthday fund” which was composed of cash gifts that could explain how the former mayor spent $840,000 over his salary.

Closing arguments are set for Monday with the jury beginning deliberations as early as Tuesday.

Kilpatrick is charged with bribery, fraud, tax crimes and racketeering conspiracy. Contractor Bobby Ferguson and his father Bernard Kilpatrick are also on trial.
