A Senseless Shooting: Where Are the Responsible Black Parents?

Guns are only part of the problem:  A gunslinger mentality is a much deeper issue for young black gang bangers.

The latest shooting in Atlanta comes as Chicago’s homicide rate skyrocketed to 500 last year for the first time since 2008. The crime wave is spiraling out of control so fast that some law enforcers claim that Americans have a greater chance of being killed in Chicago than U.S. troops do in Afghanistan.

Last weekend, Chicago authorities say seven people were killed and six wounded in gun violence in one day. Among those killed was a 34-year-old man whose mother had already lost her three other children to shootings in Chicago. Police say Ronnie Chambers, who was his mother’s youngest child, was shot in the head while sitting in a car.

After Shirley Chambers lost her third child to gun violence in 2000, she said she worried about her surviving son, Ronnie.

“I only have one child left,” Chambers told the Chicago Tribune at the time, “and I’m afraid that (the killing) won’t stop until he’s gone too.”

And 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who performed at President Barack Obama’s inauguration, was shot and killed in a Chicago park when a man opened fire on her group of friends. She was shot in the back while she was trying to run away.

Four years ago Pendleton, a 6th-grader at the time, made an anti-gang video.

“Hi, my name is Hadiya. This commercial is informational for you and your future children,” she says. “So many children out there are in gangs and it’s your job as students to say no to gangs and yes to a great future. So many children in the world have died from gang violence. More than 500 children have died from being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Guns are dangerous because people have to pull the triggers.

We can debate the issue of gun control for the next 10 years, but the bottom line is this: Until the black community collectively addresses the root causes of gun violence in our communities, we will continue to bury our young.

  1. The truth of the matter is progressive black people don’t know what to do and many are looking for answers. Those people that try to cooperate with the authorities receive little if any help, therefore many poor people feel like they are on their own. There is not a no snitching policy amongst those that want to see things change. Black people all get lumped into one category as evidenced by some of these comments, however if the problem folk don’t want help — if their children don’t want mentoring, if those that are causing all of this chaos don’t think anything is wrong with their attitudes and behavior then there is nothing progressive black people can do that is within the law.

  3. Plato’s Republic, we–a special breed, need orphanages for our special seeds–relief for parents who can not accept responsibility–parents can not be ‘stressed out–stressed beyond–busting stress–and be the best at minimum wage jobs–and be at home. Give them a break, especially since most parents are vulnerable loving Black women

  4. For the last 5 years I have been saying, “you are going to have to start reprimanding the parents of these kids!!! These actions of the kids are the faults of parents who want to get high, hang out, be friendly with their kids, buy nice cars, clothes, and houses and have the oldest child watch the kids….Once you start locking mothers and fathers up with the children, the mothers and fathers are going to feel a sense or embarrassment and do what they are supposed to do…I don’t want to hear when they are out they do what they want….You let them know what is tolerated and what is not, and this shit will stop!!!

  5. Hmmm interesting note…the teenager charged mother is only 30 years of age. So she had this boy at 15-16 yrs of age? That’s the problem….babies having babies!!!!

  6. @Wildflower
Mr. Cottman has made a valid point
The facts are: 52% of the homicides in this nation are committed by black males between the ages of 18-34. In other words, 3% of the population commits 52% of the homicides. let that sink in and you realize that this article is spot on

    • WTF? Go back to math class and redo your figures dude. Let that sink in with your “fuzzy math”.

Juveniles who were black accounted for 51.4 percent of juvenile arrests for violent crimes not just homicides. Also the category is individuals 18 and over (not 18-34 like you stated in your flawed math).

  7. Where are the responisble black parents? Where are the responsible white parents? Or any other race for that matter? We are here and our children are thriving or being killed by the forgotten, however this is NOT a color issue but a human issue in ALL races, but the media likes to spot light the black race. Stop this and focus on the issue at hand…. young people and the fact that it’s a community crisis. EVERYBODY is responsible for why our children are growing up with no real role models. No one wants to get involved anymore. We lost the “village” and gained the lynch mob. Society’s influence is much larger and stronger than any parents at times. So when you pose these questions? Ask yourself, “What have I done to contribute to this madness and what can I do to contribute to the success of our future?

    • Yes it is a black issue, every now and then you have a white nut kill and or shoot a bunch of white people however, the black on black crime and killing is systematic in black neighborhood. why? because of the enablers, Moma, Grandma, Aunt, Cousin who continously shelter their thug offf spring and are the first to go before the cameras when one of them are murdered about how great they were getting their life together, even though he/she dropped out of school, have no employmenet he was a good father, you can play this tape in every neighborhood where we have neighborhood thugs run amouck. This carnage will continue unabated until parents give guidance, supervise and take control of their children and until people in these affected neighborhood say enough is enough and began giving the Law enforcement agency the information on these thugs, the majority of whom reside in the same neighborhood they terrorize so that they can be remove and put where they need to be with the other wana be ganster behind bars. Until this happen the Politicians, Civil Rights, Church people can continue to march, sing songs and hold candel light vigil to no avail.

      • I agree with everything you said. Other races have problems but as a black women I am more worried about my own race. We seem to be the only race with this don’t snitch bs.

    • YOU ARE CORRECT TO SPECIFY THIS AS AN ISSUE FOR HUMANITY , HOWEVER FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND HISTORY, AS A RACE OF PEOPLE THE VERY CORE OF OUR BEING RELIES ON COMMUNITY , AND OUR FATHER IF WE CONTINUE TO ASSIMULATE A CULTURE THAT IS BUILT ON VIOLENCE AS A MEANS OF PROSPERITY AND LOSE OUR OWN CULTURE FOR THE SAKE ACCEPTANCE THIS IS THE RESULT. THE AREAS THE CRIMES HAPPEN WERE ABANDONED (WHITE FLIGHT) AND LEFT FOR THE FORMER SLAVE WITH NO MEANS TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF ITSELF , STORES AND BUSINESSES ALSO LEFT. AND NOW THE SAME “GHETTO” IS AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN PRIME REAL ESTATE.AS A LIFELONG CHICAGOAN GROWING UP IN THE HEART OF THE CITY ALSO KNOWN AS THE “HOOD” I HAVE SEEN POLICE AS CORRUPT AS THE CRIMINAL. SURVIVAL IS NOT LIVING AND AFTER OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF THIS MENTALITY WE MUST UNDERSTAND IT IS FOR US TO DEFEAT THE LOSS OF SELF ESTEEM. POVERTY , RACISM AND GREED ARE AT THE CORE OF OUR SELF HATE AND IT IS US FIRING UPON US.
