CHICAGO (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.‘s wife has resigned from the Chicago City Council.

Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson says in a letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday that she’s stepping down because she can’t adequately represent her South Side ward while she deals with “very painful family health matters.”

Her resignation is effective this coming Tuesday.

Jackson Jr. resigned from Congress in November. He had been on medical leave for bipolar disorder for months. He cited his health and acknowledged he was under federal investigation.

Jackson Jr. is the son of civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
