Actress/comedienne Kym Whitley knows how to find a hit TV show. She’s been on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “That’s So Raven,” “My Wife and Kids,” “The Boondocks”, “The Cleveland Show” and "Black Dynamite." So it looks like her latest venture “Animal Practice” is off to a promising start. The NBC sitcom, which premieres tonight at 8 p.m., is about a New York City veterinarian hospital run by dedicated Dr. George Coleman (Justin Kirk). Just as he’s making his practice one of the most popular in the city, he learns his ex-girlfriend Dorothy Crane (JoAnne Garcia Swisher) has just inherited the business and he’ll now be working for her.

If that’s not enough setup for comedy, there is a supporting cast that includes Whitley as Juanita, the nurse who’s more in charge than any of the doctors. Though Whitley is known both off and offscreen for her big personality, off-stage she’s best known for her big heart. Last year, Whitley adopted a baby boy, Joshua Kaleb. She has her own charity, Comics 4 Kids, which hosts toy drives and basketball games to benefit children  and her production company, Kwick Wick, has produced full-length features including “35 and Ticking” with Tamala Jones, Nicole Ari Parker and Meagan Good.
