  • NEW YORK (AP) — Bob Dylan says the stigma of slavery ruined America and he doubts the country can get rid of the shame because it was "founded on the backs of slaves."

The veteran musician tells Rolling Stone that in America "people (are) at each other's throats just because they are of a different color," adding that "it will hold any nation back." He also says blacks know that some whites "didn't want to give up slavery."

The 71-year-old Dylan said, "If slavery had been given up in a more peaceful way, America would be far ahead today."

When asked if President Barack Obama was helping to shift a change, Dylan says: "I don't have any opinion on that. You have to change your heart if you want to change."

The magazine's new issue hits newsstands Friday.

    1. He is speaking with his heart and that is very admirable; and we def need to get beyond these issues as a great nation. That said, the civil war was fought from 1861 to 1865 with no living participants still on earth. How can he impute any volitional elements of that bitter conflict to anyone in the US now? Seriously, let’s discuss this since it seems to be at the crux of his view and I am missing in his logic.

    2. As far as the pay. I had that problem too. The white women even told me to be cruel. Instead of going off, I went to the top. I got my pay raise. It’s sad it had to happen that way, but that’s the way things are. White women can be cruel. They love to throw their power over black men in your face too. I just remember that I am in control of me, not them.

    4. Change hearts and mentality……A lot of them still under pay us, a lot of them still over charge us….Took me a long time to figure out why you could not discuss salary at work but A LOT of white women make a whole lot more money than I do and we are in the same positions…..I believe our Unemployment rate is high because they won’t hire us…..Most companies in the United States are owned be repuks or tea baggers…..

    5. It needs to be more white people come foward and be truthfully about effects of slavery. Man, it has always been a hard cookie to swallow for me.
