A Utah man made his indiscretions public through a personally-written obituary.

Val Patterson revealed several truths to his family and friends by writing his own obituary and publishing it in the Salt Lake City Tribune.

The 59-year-old died a week later on July 10 from throat cancer.

Patterson wrote that although his family believed he received his doctorate degree from the University of Utah, it was actually a paperwork mistake. He never graduated.

He also confessed to stealing a business’ safe many years ago.

"As it turns out, I AM the guy who stole the safe from the Motor View Drive Inn back in June, 1971," Patterson revealed.

His widow, Mary Jane confirmed that the information in Patterson’s death notice was true.
