You may know Brooklyn’s own Mc Lyte as one of the greatest female emcees to ever grace the mic. And she did it with creativity, passion, versatility, relevance and most of all, talent.
Now she is bringing those same qualities to the community with her new charity – The Hip Hop Sisters Foundation (HHSF), which was created to redefine the essence of the hip hop generation through unity, empowerment and education.
In a historic partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, HHSF recently announced the MC Lyte UW Madison $100,000 First Wave Scholarship presented by Hip Hop Sisters Foundation and the winner will be announced in collaboration with this year’s Soul Train Music Awards.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk with MC Lyte.
“For years I’ve dreamed of having the ability to help our community and now finally the day has arrived,” MC Lyte told me. “It is my life’s mission to see those who believe, actually see their dreams come to fruition. Helping the younger generation see their strengths and potential is what my goals are for this foundation. This scholarship partnership with UW-Madison is just the beginning for what HHSF has in store.”
The educational outcomes of minorities and hip hop urban youth continue to decline and wane in comparison to their majority counterparts.
The alliance among these entities will increase educational outcomes for minorities and hip hop youth.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is October 1. The winner will be announced at this year’s Soul Train Music Awards.
