Mattel is adding a new twist on its iconic Barbie brand.

The doll company is now releasing its first “drag queen” Barbie.

The Blond Diamond Barbie Doll was designed by New York-based fashion designers David and Phillipe Blond.  Phillipe, who is a cross-dresser and one half of The Blonds design team created the doll with his signature blonde hair and makeup. It is styled with a bejeweled mini-corset dress with a sparkling cocktail ring, and adorned with a full-length faux fur coat.

Spokespersons for Mattel said they are proud to market the new doll.

“One of the great things about Barbie is that she continues to push the envelope. Barbie doesn't worry about what other people think,” said Cathy Cline, vice president of marketing for Mattel's girls' brands.

The doll is described to be 'pretty, provocative, and magical'.

The label reads: “Phillipe and David Blond believe that every woman should be glamorous every day….'Fun fashion and rock 'n' roll glam are the only rules for these gorgeous garments…Our favourite blonde celebrates The Blonds, dressed for an amazing adventure.

In 2009, The Blonds participated in Barbie’s 50th birthday fashion show which started their budding partnership.

The Blonds are known throughout Hollywood for their sparkly corsets worn by celebrities like Beyoncé and Katy Perry as well as for their theatrical fashion shows.

Through their Barbie collaboration, David is hoping to take their Blonds’ brand more mainstream.

“And that's the direction we would like to produce,' he said. Things that are more accessible to more people. This is a step in the right direction,” he said.
