SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Colorado's movie theater shooting hasn't rekindled the gun control debate in Congress. But Democratic leaders in three of the nation's most populous states are pushing weapons and ammunitions bans.

California and New York lawmakers have proposed legislation that would make it more difficult to buy and use guns. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has proposed a strict assault weapons ban.

The suspect in the July 20 Colorado shooting, James Holmes, legally bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition online without raising authorities' attention.

Two Democrats proposed a bill that would prohibit online weapons purchases in Congress weeks after the shooting. But no action was taken. The White House says President Barack Obama isn't pushing for stronger gun control laws this year.
