WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he's appalled by a shooting at the Washington headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group and says he's praying for the wounded guard and his family.

Romney issued a statement saying "there is no place for such violence in our society." He also said he is praying for employees of the Family Research Council, whose sense of security he said has been shattered by the day's "horrific events."

Authorities say an armed man walked into the council's headquarters Wednesday morning and was confronted by a security guard, whom he shot in the arm before the wounded guard and others wrestled him to the ground.

The Family Research Council takes conservative positions on social issues and strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion.
